MAHLER'S SIXTH SYMPHONY ("TRAGIC")

Saturday, April 4, 2026, 7 P.M.

Buckley Recital Hall, Arms Music Center, Amherst College

The Amherst Symphony Orchestra (ASO) continues its annual cycle of symphonies by Gustav Mahler with his monumental Sixth Symphony in A minor ("Tragic").  As in his Second Symphony ("Resurrection"), Mahler poses the unavoidable, eternal existential questions: "why do we live, love and suffer?"

But in the Sixth— with two (or three?) blows of his famed percussion "hammer"— the composer's conclusions are decidedly bleaker.

Free general admission.
