The Amherst Symphony Orchestra is based at Amherst College, Amherst, MA. The Amehrst Symphony Orchestra consists of anywhere from 50-80 Amherst College students (depending on the time of year or repertoire needs) as well as up to 10 additional students (depending on gaps in personnel) from the other Five Colleges: the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Smith and Hampshire. It is one of the only liberal arts college orchestras comprised entirely of students and presents three concerts per semester with repertoire focusing primarily on late classical, Romantic, and the early twentieth century–but complemented by a commitment to new music and world premieres, support of Amherst College composer senior honors theses performance projects, an annual staged or in-concert opera, an annual staged Broadway-style musical, pops concerts, and showcases for Amherst College student concerti.
